Milanese caffè on the West 4th corner — espresso at the bar, veal Milanese in the back, cashmere everywhere
Sant Ambroeus began in Milan in 1936 and the West Village outpost sits on the corner of West 4th and Perry, which is one of the more photographed intersections in New York for reasons that have nothing to do with the restaurant and everything to do with the block. The front is a proper Italian caffè — stand at the bar, drink a cappuccino, eat a cornetto, leave. The back is a dining room doing Milanese classics with a veal Milanese that hangs off the plate. The crowd is exactly what the setting suggests. The coffee, unusually for a room this well-dressed, is very good.
