The 1980s downtown canteen that never stopped — neon clock, steak frites, and a room that still works at midnight
The Odeon opened in 1980 in a former cafeteria on West Broadway and became the room where the downtown art world, the magazine world, and everyone orbiting them ate at two in the morning — the cover of Bright Lights, Big City is a photograph of its neon clock. What is remarkable is how little it has curdled into nostalgia. The brasserie cooking is still competent and unfussy, the burger at the bar is still correct, and the room still fills late. TriBeCa around it became one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the country. The Odeon kept serving steak frites.
