James Beard–winning TriBeCa brasserie from the Balthazar and Minetta Tavern alumni — unfussy, confident French cooking in a room built to last
Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson, former chefs at Balthazar and Minetta Tavern, opened Frenchette in 2018 in a TriBeCa space with worn wood floors and curvy red leather banquettes. The restaurant won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2019. The cooking is French in its structure and ingredients but unfussy in its execution: duck frites, escargots over scrambled eggs, spaghetti with bottarga, the kind of approachable Gallic food that reminds you why the brasserie format persists. The brunch pancakes have developed a devoted following. The room is loud and warm and full of people clearly happy to be there. Frenchette is the rare restaurant that somehow gets better with age.
