A Viennese café inside the Neue Galerie — strudel, goulash, and Klimt in the same building
Café Sabarsky occupies a ground-floor room of the Neue Galerie on Fifth Avenue, and it is a genuine reconstruction of a Viennese coffeehouse rather than a gesture toward one: Adolf Loos furniture, Josef Hoffmann light fixtures, marble tables, and a pastry case that takes the work seriously. Kurt Gutenbrunner's kitchen sends out proper goulash, spaetzle, and a crêpe-like Salzburger nockerl. The strudel and the Sachertorte are the reason most people are here, and both are correct. Combining it with the Klimt collection upstairs makes for one of the better afternoons in the city. The café takes no reservations, so arrive early or accept the line.
