A tiny York Avenue omakase counter — twenty seats, no menu, no à la carte, BYOB
Tanoshi is a narrow room on York Avenue with a counter, a couple of chefs, and a format that has not budged: omakase nigiri only, at set seating times, and you bring your own bottle. The fish is very good and the pacing is quick — this is not a two-hour meditation, it is roughly twenty pieces handed to you one at a time with a running commentary. The BYOB policy keeps the total well below what comparable sushi costs in Manhattan, which is a large part of why it stays booked. Seatings are rigid and the room is cramped. Both are the trade for the price.
Tanoshi Sushi is a tiny York Avenue omakase counter — twenty seats, no menu, no à la carte, BYOB. Regulars order nigiri omakase and uni.
Tanoshi Sushi is priced at $$$ — approx. $40–$75 per person.
Tanoshi Sushi does not list an online reservation system. Reservations required; seatings are fixed and sell out
