Jody Williams' tiny West Village gastrotheque — marble bar, pressed tin ceiling, and the best pain perdu in New York at any hour of the day
Jody Williams opened Buvette in 2011 in a narrow room on Grove Street in the West Village, and the tiny French gastrotheque — with its marble bar, pressed tin ceiling, and zinc countertop — has become one of those rooms that makes you feel transported somewhere better. The menu runs from morning through late night: croissants and pain perdu at breakfast; croque monsieur and steak tartare through lunch; duck confit and moules at dinner; a glass of Burgundy anytime. Everything is made with the conviction that French cooking is still the template for how to eat well. Buvette does not take reservations and is perennially packed. The wait on Grove Street at brunch hour has become its own institution.
