Dark-red vinyl booths, strong margaritas, and the same family running it since 1956 — a James Beard America's Classic
Rafael Vega opened Casa Vega on Ventura Boulevard in 1956 and his daughter Christy has run it since 1997, which explains why the room has never been renovated into something it isn't. The lighting is low enough to feel like a private booking at any hour, the booths are red vinyl, the walls are covered in decades of accumulated Mexican folk art, and the margaritas are poured with a heavy and entirely intentional hand. The food is Mexican-American in the specific mid-century Los Angeles register — combination plates, melted cheese, warm chips arriving before you ask — and it is not trying to be anything else. The James Beard Foundation named it an America's Classic in 2022. Sixty-plus years in, it is still the most reliably fun room in the Valley.
