A cast-iron chicken and a wood oven down a cobblestone side street — the best-hidden dining room in Brooklyn
Vinegar Hill is a few blocks of cobblestone and federal-era houses wedged between DUMBO and the Navy Yard, and it does not feel like anywhere else in New York. Vinegar Hill House sits in the middle of it in a room that looks salvaged rather than designed, with a wood oven doing most of the work. The cast-iron chicken has been the signature since 2008 — crisp-skinned, served in the pan it cooked in — and the red wattle pork chop is the other thing regulars will not let you skip. There is a small garden out back that is the best seat from May through October. Getting here requires intent, which keeps it good.
