Vijay Kumar's Michelin-starred South Indian kitchen on Greenwich Ave — gunpowder dosa, and no apologies for the heat
Semma opened in 2021 on Greenwich Avenue and did something no other Indian restaurant in New York had managed: it cooked the food of Tamil Nadu at the highest level without softening it for the room. Chef Vijay Kumar grew up in a village in Tamil Nadu and the menu reflects that specificity — snails, goat intestine, banana-flower vada, dosas built for sharing — plated with restaurant-grade precision and seasoned at full strength. It won a Michelin star in 2022 and has held it since. The dining room is small and green and constantly full. Book a month ahead or accept that you are not eating here.
