Michael White's coastal Italian on Central Park South — fusilli with octopus and bone marrow, and a crudo list to match
Marea opened on Central Park South in 2009 and made its reputation on a single dish: fusilli with octopus braised in red wine and bone marrow, which sounds heavy and eats with surprising precision. The crudo program that opens the meal is the other half of the case — raw fish dressed with restraint and enough acid to keep it lively. Michael White built the restaurant around coastal Italian cooking at a level of ambition the city had not really seen applied to seafood pasta, and it has held the standard through several changes in the kitchen. The room is polished, expensive, and largely full of people conducting business.
