Standing-room tacos in Chelsea Market — adobada carved off the trompo onto tortillas made a few feet away
Los Tacos No. 1 was started by friends from Tijuana and Brawley who concluded that New York did not have the tacos they grew up with, and the Chelsea Market counter has been mobbed since it opened. The adobada comes off a vertical trompo, shaved to order, and lands on tortillas pressed a few feet from where you are standing. The nopal taco is the one to order if you want to understand that the kitchen is not just doing meat well. There is no seating — you eat standing at a rail, quickly, surrounded by other people doing the same. For the money it is among the best things to eat in Manhattan.
