America's first pizzeria, licensed in 1905 — coal-fired Neapolitan-American pies in NoLita
Lombardi's holds the first pizza license issued in the United States, granted in 1905, and it has traded on that fact honestly for a century. The pies come out of a coal oven at the corner of Spring and Mott — thin, charred at the edge, and sold whole. The clam pie is the one that surprises people who came for the history and stayed for the food: no mozzarella, just clams, garlic, oregano, and olive oil. The room is tiled, loud, and consistently full of tourists, which locals sometimes hold against it. The pizza does not care about that argument and remains very good.
