Second-floor Koreatown grill with charcoal fires and thick pork jowl — the 32nd Street benchmark
Jongro occupies a second floor on 32nd Street and grills over real charcoal rather than gas, which is the difference you can taste and the reason the line runs down the stairwell most nights. The pork jowl is cut thick and rendered slowly until the edges crisp, and the marinated short rib is sweet in the way it is supposed to be rather than in the way that covers for the meat. Banchan arrive in quantity and get refilled without asking. The room is bright, loud, and hot from the grills, and it runs to midnight or later. It is the most reliable Korean barbecue in Manhattan and it does not particularly need to be charming about it.
