Downtown Brooklyn's landmarked 1879 dining room, reopened — gaslight chandeliers, mahogany paneling, and Michelin-recognized cooking worth the trip across the bridge
Gage & Tollner reopened on Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn in 2021, bringing back a restaurant that originally opened in 1879 and became one of New York's most celebrated seafood houses. The space is landmarked and extraordinary: gaslight-era chandeliers, mahogany panels, beveled mirrors, red leather banquettes. Chef Sohui Kim revived the menu with the original lobster thermidor and dry-aged steaks alongside modern additions by pastry chef Caroline Schiff, whose desserts have become a destination in themselves. The weekend lunch burger with the Golden Bread Brûlée side has developed its own following. Gage & Tollner is the most atmospheric room in Brooklyn and one of the most underrated meals in the city.
