A Michelin-starred tasting menu hidden behind an art gallery door in Greenwich Village
Frevo is entered through what looks like a small art gallery on West 8th Street; the dining room is behind it, sixteen seats around an open kitchen. The menu is a French-rooted tasting menu with Brazilian references from chef Franco Sampogna, changing frequently, run at a level that earned and has kept a Michelin star. The gallery conceit could be precious and mostly is not, because the cooking is confident enough not to need the framing. Two seatings a night and a small room mean reservations are difficult. The wine pairing is worth taking.
