The Sturgeon King on Amsterdam since 1908 — smoked fish, scrambled eggs and onions, and formica that has earned its patina
Barney Greengrass has occupied this corner of Amsterdam Avenue since 1908 and calls itself the Sturgeon King without much argument from anyone. The front is an appetizing counter — sturgeon, sable, Nova, whitefish salad, all sliced to order — and the back is a dining room with wallpaper and formica tables that have not been updated because updating them would be missing the point. The dish to order is the scrambled eggs with Nova and onions, which arrives as a large disordered pile and is better than that description suggests. It is closed Mondays, it does not take reservations, and Saturday morning brings out the whole Upper West Side. Go anyway.
