The pizzaiolo who helped build Lombardi's reputation, running his own Astoria coal-oven-style shop
Andrew Bellucci is one of the more storied figures in New York pizza — he helped establish the modern Lombardi's, then disappeared from the business for years before returning. His Astoria shop on 30th Avenue is the result of that return, and it turns out a New York-style pie built on the old coal-oven principles: thin, crisp, well-charred, with a sauce that tastes of actual tomato. Slices are available at the counter and full pies are the better order. Bellucci died in 2023, and the shop has continued under the team he trained, which is the outcome he would have wanted.
