James Beard chef Matt Molina's Highland Park Italian — Michelin-recognized with cult-status butter bread
Chef Matt Molina won a James Beard Award as chef de cuisine at Osteria Mozza under Nancy Silverton, and when he opened Hippo in 2018 in the former Highland Park Post Office (hence HP-O, hence Hippo), he brought that technique to Northeast LA's most ambitious Italian kitchen. The seasonal menu is rooted in California produce and daily-made pasta; the butter and honey bread service that arrives first has its own cult following; and the Michelin Guide recognition in 2024 confirmed what the neighborhood had known for years. Warm, convivial, and exactly what the area needed.
