West Adams soul food and Creole institution since 1969 — gumbo, fried chicken, and bread pudding that have fed generations
Harold Berthaud opened Harold & Belle's in 1969, bringing New Orleans Creole cooking to West Jefferson Boulevard at a moment when West Adams was building its identity as a center of Black professional life in Los Angeles. More than fifty years later, the restaurant is still family-run and the gumbo — a dark, complex roux with shrimp, crab, and andouille — remains one of the best in the city. The fried chicken is crisp and perfectly seasoned; the bread pudding with whiskey sauce is a proper dessert in the New Orleans tradition. This is irreplaceable institutional cooking.
