Wo Hop

The basement Cantonese institution on Mott Street — open since 1938 and still the last stop of a long night

About Wo Hop

Wo Hop has been run by the Huang family since 1938, down a short flight of stairs off Mott Street, and it has spent most of that time being the place New Yorkers end up rather than the place they set out for. The Cantonese-American menu is enormous and largely unchanged — roast pork lo mein, wonton soup, chow fun with the wok char that only comes from a burner that has never really cooled down. The room is narrow, fluorescent-lit, and lined with decades of signed photographs. It expanded to street level in 2025, but the basement is still the one people mean. Cash goes further here than a reservation ever could.
