The East Village's Ukrainian coffee shop since 1954 — pierogi at every hour, and open all night on weekends
Veselka has been on the corner of Second Avenue and Ninth Street since 1954, when the East Village was the center of Ukrainian New York, and it has never moved or meaningfully changed. The pierogi come seven ways and you can mix them; the borscht is served hot or cold depending on the season; the bigos is the order in January. It runs twenty-four hours on weekends, which has made it the default destination for every category of person out at four in the morning in lower Manhattan. Since 2022 it has also been a gathering point and fundraising hub for the neighborhood's Ukrainian community. Few restaurants in New York carry this much of a neighborhood's history and still function as a regular place to eat.
