A French bistro on Vernon Boulevard since 2001 — the neighborhood's classic, unchanged in the best way
Tournesol opened on Vernon Boulevard in 2001, when Long Island City had almost nothing, and it has spent the intervening decades doing exactly the same thing at exactly the same level while towers went up around it. The menu is bistro canon: escargots, duck confit, steak frites, a good tarte tatin. The room is small, yellow, and unfashionable in a way that has looped back around to being appealing. The prix fixe is one of the better values in Queens. It is a genuine neighborhood restaurant that predates the neighborhood as it currently exists.
