Coney Island coal-oven pizza since 1924 — weekends only, cash only, and no apologies for any of it
Totonno Pero worked at Lombardi's before opening his own place on Neptune Avenue in 1924, which makes this one of the oldest continuously family-run pizzerias in the country. It has survived two fires and a hurricane. The coal oven produces a thin, irregular, heavily blistered pie with fresh mozzarella torn over it, and the crust has a bitterness at the char that industrial ovens cannot replicate. It opens weekends only, runs until the dough is gone, and takes cash. The dining room is tiled and unglamorous and the staff will not be performing hospitality at you. The pizza is among the four or five best in New York.
