Sylvia Woods opened this restaurant in 1962 with a lunch counter and eventually made it the most famous soul food address in America. Three generations later it is still family-run and still on Lenox Avenue. The plate to order is smothered chicken with collards and candied yams, or the ribs, which come with a sauce sweet enough to divide opinion and sticky enough to settle it. The Sunday gospel brunch is a genuine institution and books well ahead. Sylvia's has been a tourist destination for decades, and that shows in the room; it is also a Harlem restaurant that has fed the neighborhood for over sixty years.
