Penny

A seafood bar on East 10th from the Claud team — raw, tinned, and grilled fish in a slim, elegant room

About Penny

Penny is the seafood counterpart to Claud from the same team, occupying a narrow East Village room built around a raw bar. The menu is short and disciplined: oysters, clams, a rotating list of raw and cured preparations, tinned fish served properly, and a few grilled whole fish for the table. Nothing is over-sauced and nothing is oversized, which makes it easy to eat a lot without noticing. The wine list leans toward light, saline bottles that suit the food. It has been one of the hardest reservations downtown since it opened, and the bar seats held for walk-ins are the realistic strategy.
