Keith McNally's Meatpacking brasserie, revived on Gansevoort — subway tile, mirrors, and steak frites at all hours
Keith McNally opened the original Pastis in 1999 and it became the restaurant that the Meatpacking District organized itself around, then closed in 2014 when the neighborhood's rents did what they did. It reopened on Gansevoort Street in 2019 with the nicotine-yellow walls, subway tile, and antiqued mirrors reproduced closely enough that most people cannot tell the difference. The food is brasserie standards executed properly — steak frites, moules, a good frisée — which is all it has ever needed to be. It serves from breakfast onward, and the mid-afternoon hours at the bar are the most pleasant time to be there.
