L&B has been on 86th Street since 1939, and the Sicilian square slice it sells out of a walk-up window is one of the genuinely distinctive pizzas in New York: thick focaccia-style base, mozzarella laid down first, sauce spooned over the top, a dusting of pecorino. It should not work in the order it works in. The spumoni that gives the place its name comes out of the shop next door and is the required finish. You eat at picnic tables in a paved lot under string lights, surrounded by several generations of Bensonhurst doing the same. It is a long ride on the D train and it is entirely worth taking.
