Modern Korean cooking on North 6th Street — a Williamsburg room with real ambition behind the pass
Lalaon opened on North 6th Street and set out to do contemporary Korean cooking without leaning on barbecue or fried chicken, which are the two formats Williamsburg already had covered. The banchan are made carefully and rotate; the larger plates are built around grilling and fermentation with technique that reads as fine-dining rather than casual. The room is minimal and dark. It landed on The Infatuation's hit list shortly after opening and has stayed busy since, which in this stretch of Williamsburg means it is doing something the block did not already have.
