Johnny's Reef sits at the far end of City Island with a concrete patio facing Long Island Sound, and the operation is deliberately unrefined: you queue at a counter, order fried seafood by the platter, carry your tray to a table outside, and eat with plastic forks while the water goes by. The calamari and the shrimp are the reliable orders. It is not a place for anyone seeking delicacy — it is a place for eating a great deal of fried fish outdoors in July with a frozen drink. It closes for the winter. There is no better argument for driving to the Bronx in summer.
