A rotating cast of grandmothers cooking their own countries' food, one night at a time, in St. George
Joe Scaravella opened Enoteca Maria after losing his mother and grandmother, built around an idea that sounds like a gimmick and is not: grandmothers from around the world rotate through the kitchen, each cooking the food of her own country from her own recipes, one night at a time. A Sri Lankan nonna on Thursday, an Argentine one on Saturday. There is a permanent Italian menu alongside it. The cooking is uneven in the way home cooking is uneven, which is the point — it tastes like someone's family rather than like a restaurant. It is a five-minute walk from the ferry terminal. Book ahead and check who is cooking.
