A tiny Hamilton Heights kitchen turning out some of the best Mexican food in Manhattan
Cocina Consuelo is a very small room on Hamilton Place in West Harlem, run by chef Karina García, who founded it with her husband, musician Lalo Rodríguez, and it has quietly become one of the strongest Mexican kitchens in Manhattan. The birria is deep and properly spiced, the chilaquiles at brunch are the neighborhood's best, and the salsas are made with the kind of attention that separates a real kitchen from a good one. There are only a handful of tables, prices are low relative to what is on the plate, and the room fills with locals rather than pilgrims. It is worth the trip uptown, and it is the sort of place regulars are quietly reluctant to publicize.
