Queens' Michelin-starred Chiapan kitchen — mole de piaza, chamoy margaritas, and a backyard patio in Long Island City
Cosme Aguilar cooks the food of Chiapas at Casa Enrique on a quiet block in Long Island City, and has held a Michelin star since 2014 — the first Mexican restaurant in New York to earn one, and still among a very small number nationally. The mole de piaza is the dish that made the reputation: a long-cooked chicken mole from his mother's recipe, dark and layered rather than sweet. The cochinita pibil and the chamoy margarita are the other two orders people repeat. The room is plain white and the back patio is one of the pleasanter places to eat outside in Queens. It is a fifteen-minute subway ride from Midtown and consistently worth it.
