An Arthur Avenue salumeria hung with hundreds of curing sausages — the Bronx's Little Italy at its most literal
Calabria Pork Store has been on Arthur Avenue since 1935 and its ceiling is entirely covered with sausages hanging to cure — thousands of them, which is both the shop's working method and the most photographed thing in the neighborhood. It is a salumeria rather than a restaurant: you come for cured meat, cheese, and a sandwich built at the counter. The soppressata is excellent and the combo hero is assembled by people who have been doing it for decades. Arthur Avenue remains the most intact Italian-American commercial district in New York, and this is its most vivid single room.
