Plant-based Ethiopian in Bushwick — shared injera platters, coffee ceremony, and a room that turns into a music venue
Bunna Cafe is entirely plant-based, which in Ethiopian cooking is less of a constraint than it sounds — the fasting tradition means a substantial portion of the canon has always been vegan. The move is the beyaynetu, a large platter of a dozen or so stews and salads spooned onto injera and eaten with your hands by everyone at the table simultaneously. The shiro, a thick chickpea stew, is the best single thing on it. They run a traditional coffee ceremony with roasting and incense, and the room converts into a music venue on weekends. It is one of the most genuinely convivial restaurants in Brooklyn.
