Jewish-American classics with a Hungarian accent on Franklin Avenue — pastries by day, bistro by night
Agi's Counter, named for chef Jeremy Salamon's grandmother, works the full day on Franklin Avenue — a pastry case and coffee in the morning, a proper bistro menu at night. The through-line is Jewish-American cooking pulled toward Hungary and Austria: cheese-stuffed palacsinta, paprikash, rich desserts that do not apologize for being rich. The pastries are excellent and the savory cooking is better than the counter-service framing suggests. The room is small, tiled, and bright. It is one of the more genuinely distinctive restaurants in Crown Heights and it manages to be a neighborhood café and a destination at the same time.
